The history of Clars Auction Gallery dates back to 1948 when Harvey Clar, a native of Oakland, California, entered the auction business. At just 18 years old, Harvey began conducting industrial auctions that focused on various industries such as machine, woodworking, and automobile dealerships and repair shops. Over the following decades, his expertise and reputation grew as he conducted a wide range of commercial and industrial auctions alongside occasional estate auctions. As the demand for his services in evaluating and auctioning personal property like fine art, furniture, and jewelry increased, Harvey Clar and his wife established their own auction gallery in Oakland in 1972.

In 1996, Harvey Clar sold the auction gallery business to Redge Martin, an Oakland resident. Mr. Martin holds a Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University and an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to taking over Clars Auction Gallery, he gained valuable experience working for renowned companies like Ford Motor Company, Dole Foods, and Butterfield & Butterfield Auctioneers. Currently serving as CEO of the gallery and one of the main auctioneers and specialists, Mr. Martin has led Clars Auction House to tremendous growth in reputation and prominence. Today, it is widely recognized as the West Coast's premier auction house, serving clients from around the world. In 2004, Clars began offering simultaneous internet bidding on many of its lots, further expanding its reach.

Clars Auction Gallery conducts monthly three-day estate auctions at its North Oakland location, featuring approximately 2000 lots. These auctions attract an attendance of 3000-5000 people who come to both view and bid on the items. Additionally, the gallery distributes its online auction catalog to more than 100,000 dealers and collectors worldwide. Since 2001, Clars Auction Gallery has successfully sold over $165,000,000 worth of Fine Art, Furnishings, Jewelry, Vehicles, and Collectibles.
